Mission: To promote grassroots organizing in the colonia designated communities; to promote social and economic self sufficiency through advocacy, collaboration and facilitation of economic development and access to safe, decent and sanitary housing in the colonias; to develop multi issue, self help community based organizations to respond to common needs; to create a coalition among colonias communities by providing leadership training, organizing capacity and technical assistance to existing colonias and future colonia organizations; and to advocate for member organizations on issues such as funding and policies related to colonias at the county, state, and federal levels.
Programs: The chaparral family development center continues to provide early childhood education (ece) programs in chaparral, new mexico. The cfdc is a five-star ece program that includes an pre-k, extended-day pre- kindergarten, after school program in one of the largest colonias in southern new mexico. Over 85 children are enrolled in the various programs, serving over 40 families in chaparral. The complete bilingual and bicultural programs are geared to prepare children to transition into the academic rigor they will encounter once they enroll in regular school. The integrated services for immigrant families (isif), is made of three programs: the u. S. Citizenship preparation classes, legal immigration services, and the promotoras de apoyo familiar. The isif provides citizenship preparation classes throughout doa ana county. Classes were provided in hatch, anthony, vado, sunland park, and las cruces proper. Over 230 students successfully completed their classes. The legal immigration services offices receives thousands of walk-in inquiries: in 2016, we recorded 3,322 walk-ins; in 2017, we recorded 5,084. The legal immigration office processed 1,599 applications, including 45% which were new petitions for adjusted status, renew legal permanent residency, work permits, and naturalization applications, etc. The third program under isif is the promotoras de apoyo familiar (paf) training program. This program provided 10 trainings on the following topics: bullying in the schools, preparing for a college education, americans with disabilities, act, mental health for immigrant families, financial education, civil and human rights, daca 9deferred action for childhood arrivals), the probate process. 40 women received training in calendar year 2016. Between 2016, over 40 women received various trainings. The cdc owned various properties, including a commercial building, and family rentals. The cdc provides operation management for all properties.
