Mission: The domestic abuse project of delaware county, inc (dap) seeks to prevent domestic violence and is committed to providing services that meet the needs of victims. Dap supports an empowerment process which enables victims to move toward self-sufficiency.
Programs: Emergency shelter: this program provides food, clothing and temporary emergency housing for victims of domestic violence and their minor children who are rendered homeless due to domestic violence. A wide range of supportive services are provided to adults and children. In fiscal year 2017, 4,416 nights of emergency shelter were provided to 134 women and children.
the domestic abuse project of delaware county, inc. , has operated nana's attic thrift store, a retail business since 2002. It is located in the lawrence park shopping center in broomall. Nana's provides dap with a source of earned revenue but also functions as an outlet for the many donations received and is a source of adult and children's clothing and household items for resident clients. Nana's attic is supported by a full time thrift store manager, assistant manager, a part time staff person and over 50 volunteers. The retail business is open seven days a week, excluding holidays. Donations are accepted every day and all proceeds from the store support dap programming.
legal services program: this program provides legal options counseling, court accompaniment, legal representation in protection from abuse matters, assistance in gaining temporary pfa's and criminal court accompaniment and advocacy at each of the 31 district courts. Officers from all 40 municipal police departments are trained by dap's police liaison. 108 victims were assisted with temporary protection orders, 132 were assisted with final protection orders and 253 court appearances were made by dap attorneys. 260 victims received criminal court advocacy and accompaniment at preliminary hearings in 31 district courts. 495 victims received in-person legal options counseling and 132 victims benefited from on site counseling at pfa court. 105 victims were helped through dap's satellite office in chester city.
counseling- the counseling program provides crisis options, short term and long term therapeutic counseling, children's counseling groups and financial assistance to victims of domestic violence. Specialized programs include economic empowerment and financial literacy training. In its most recently completed fiscal year 2017. Dap provided 4,416 nights of emergency sheltor, responded to 4,891 hot line calls, provided crisis intervention counseling to 526 new clients, and 362 clients received short term counseling. 132 benefitted from on site counseling at pfa court. 291 victims were provided with economic empowerment training and 31 clients received relocation funds to move toward greater safety. Community education and outreach- this program provides 45-hour domestic violence training to new volunteers, interns and staff as well as training and presentations to elementary, secondary and higher educational schools and presentations to civic, community and religious groups, a total of 110 presentations were made in fiscal year 2017, reaching 2,783 students, faculty and community residents. Dap's medical advocate provided 29 training programs at delaware county hospitals reaching 226 health care professionals, 38 community trainings were provided, reaching 610 individuals, in addition, 16 victims were assisted by dap's medical advocate, who also provided outreach at 38 health fairs and community events. In addition, (4)45 hour domestic trainings were conducted for new volunteers, staff and interns.
