Mission: Detroit Hives; a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to improve the quality of life for people and pollinators, living within underserved communities, through the transformation of vacant lots into educational green spaces. Founded in 2016, Detroit Hives now exist in over 29 locations, managing over 4.5 million honeybees, proclaiming DETROIT IS THE PLACE TO BEE! Through their BEE THE CHANGE Program, they educate the next generation of leaders on sustainability and environmental practices.
Results: In just under seven years Detroit Hives' has achieved the following and its work has been recognized by the following awards: Accomplishments: - Introduce an urban beekeeping model to support people and pollinators within underserved communities. - Expanded Nationally to help formed MO HIVES, KC in Kanas City, MO - Founded National Urban Beekeeping Day - Worked with Detroit City Council to help pass a resolution, recognizing Detroit as a Bee City. - Expanded our operation in over 29 locations, managing over 4.5 Million Honeybees - Through our BEE THE CHANGE Program we've educated over 4,000 students on the importance of pollinator conservation. Partnered with local businesses, and restaurants to promote honey as a climate-friendly food and boost economic mobility.
