soil health program - the southwest nd soil health demonstration project is a ten-year cooperative effort between central stark, dunn county and western soil conservation districts; dickinson research extension center (drec); dakota west rc&d; and the north dakota natural resources conservation service (nrcs) to improve soil health through increased crop diversity and cover crops. The project objectives of the demonstration are to increase soil organic matter, soil water retention, soil nutrient retention and soil carbon content. Improved crop diversity will result in fewer input costs and more effective use of pesticides. Project methodology will focus on seeding without tillage, inter-seeding cover crops, and harvesting mechanically for seed, forage or grazing. The demonstration project is being be conducted on one quarter section of land owned by the dickinson research extension center along-side state highway 22 near manning, nd. The land is divided into eight eighteen-acre plots that will demonstrate a wide variety of crop rotations and cover crops.
