Mission: Provide support for educational, cultural and environmental projects to preserve the mayan ruins at copan honduras
Programs: The conservation project "guaras en libertad, la belleza regressa (parrots in freedom, beauty returns) is a joint project between copan association, a honduran ngo, and the macaw mountain bird reserve, located in copan, honduras. Since this project began in 2011 the copan maya foundation has funded the educational component of the program. The program educates the student population of the copan valley about the importance of protecting and conserving the scarlet macaw, the national bird of honduras and a sacred icon from ancient maya times. To date more than 5000 school children have benefited from the educational modules. Given that the first impulse of many youths in the area is to capture these birds, our goal has been to change this behavior through our educational program. In the process we foster a deeper appreciation for the local ecosystems as well as for the significance of the scarlet macaw as part of maya heritage.
