Causes: Civil Rights, Minority Rights
Mission: The congressional black caucus foundation, inc. (cbcf) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy, research and educational institute that aims to help improve the socioeconomic circumstances of african americans and other underserved communities. Founded in 1976 and based in washington, d. C. , cbcf envisions a world in which the black community is free of all disparities and able to contribute fully to advancing the common good. Its mission is to advance the global black community by developing leaders, informing policy and educating the public. It is achieving that mission by: facilitating the exchange of ideas and information to address critical issues affecting our communities; developing strategic research and historical resources for the public; providing leadership development and scholarship opportunities; developing effective programs and research to address social, economic and health disparities.
Programs: Leadership institute for public service: the congressional black caucus foundation, incorporated (cbcf) leadership institute for public service offers fellowship, internship and scholarship opportunities to african-american students and young professionals who are interested in gaining first-hand experience in public policymaking and are committed to addressing social inequities among underserved groups. Fellowships are two-year policy training and leadership development programs for early-career professionals who have earned a graduate degree. Internships offer policy exposure and leadership experience to undergraduates and recent college graduates during the spring, summer or fall. Scholarships in science, health, environmental studies, education, business, visual and performing arts and other fields help to support the academic aspirations of black students and increase minority participation in a wide range of career sectors, especially in those underrepresented by minorities.
research & policy analysis: cbcf's center for policy analysis and research (cpar) identifies, analyzes, and disseminates policy-related information critical to advancing the social conditions of african americans. Cpar's six initiatives focus on stem education and employment; minority business development and entrepreneurship; poverty alleviation and juvenile justice reform; environmental sustainability; maximizing the benefits of the affordable care act; and black voter mobilization and midterm elections. The avoice virtual library, a key research initiative of the cbcf, preserves and shares the contributions of african americans in congress, highlighting their work on u. S. Domestic and foreign policy.
public health: the cbcf seeks to expand african americans' awareness of conditions that disproportionately affect their health and increase their knowledge of programs and policies to improve health outcomes in their communities. Currently, the cbcf collaborates with 18 civil rights and social justice organizations to highlight the impact of hiv and the ongoing stigma surrounding hiv and aids on those most affected by the disease.
