Programs: After-school quality improvement programthe after-school quality improvement program was funded through a $240,000 grant through the nc department of public instruction. The goal of the program was to provide additional academic support around the areas of mathematics and english/language arts to students with identified needs after school. The program served approximately 338 students between january and june of 2017.
communities in schools (cis)communities in schools, inc. , is a national drop-out prevention organization. Since 1991, the organization has proudly championed the national organizations mission locally. As part of that mission, cis believes that every student needs and deserves:a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult. A safe place to learn and grow. A healthy start and a healthy future. A marketable skill to use upon graduation. A chance to give back to peers and community. Cis operates as an elective class in all four lincoln county middle schools and seeks to achieve these goals by pairing each student with a volunteer mentor. Cis graduation coaches serves students in three of the lincoln county high schools. Through the involvement of the cis staff person, community, school administration, and the students parents or guardians, we strive to build a collaborative team and supportive environment where the primary goal is to offer each student the opportunity to reach their fullest potential in school and in life.
cis after-schoolthe cis after-school program currently operates in two lincoln county middle schools during the school year. The program is funded through a grant awarded through the lincoln county juvenile crime prevention council. The initiative was started in an attempt to reduce the instances of juvenile crimeboth as perpetrator and as victimsduring the hours of 3-6pma time when teenagers are most likely to be unsupervised. The program focuses on providing a safe, healthy, and fun alternative for students to utilize after-school. Participants receive a snack, help with their homework, and get to participate in group activities, community service projects, and field trips.
