Mission: The mission of Communities In Schools of Durham is to champion the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people stay in school and prepare for life.
Programs: Incredible years - conducted 5 programs at four schools, three in english and two in spanish. Caregivers reported a statistically significant decrease in their use of harsh discipline and inconsistent discipline, and statistically significant increase in their use of appropriate discipline, positive parenting, and clear expectations. Caregivers reported a statistically significant decrease in the frequency(intensity) of childrens challenging behaviors, and a statistically significant decrease in the degree to which the behaviors are problematic.
graduation coaches - worked in four schools and served directly 464 students and brought school-wide services to over 3,200 students. Last school year, 90% of our seniors graduatedcompared to 79. 6% of seniors within all of durham countyand 80 percent of our students were promoted to the next grade level. Many of our schools, including our nontraditional, credit-recovery high school, have also seen a significant reduction in absenteeism. In february 2014, child trends, a nonpartisan research center, released a major study affirming the effectiveness of the cis model. The study concludes that there is an emerging evidence base to support the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of integrated student supports in improving educational outcomes.
reads - conducted in 11 schools providing 1,161 students with 10 books each. Reads students read more books over the summer compared to controls, and reads students from high poverty schools reported a statistically significant increased reading comprehension compared to control students.
