Causes: Food, Food Banks & Pantries
Mission: The mission of comfort food community is to contribute to health of our community through the inspirational power of good food. The vision of comfort food community is the creation of a food center located in the greater greenwich area whose purpose is to leverage the communitys physical and social resources to eliminate food insecurity. We will accomplish this by developing a space where individuals, families, farms, schools, social agencies, and local businesses come together to share knowledge, build skills and enjoy good food.
Programs: Greenwich and cossayuna food pantries-in 2017, the combined lbs. Distributed: 194,000-combined individuals served: 13,642-on average, serving 100 households (200+ household members) every week-over 50% of the pounds of product distributed are made up of healthy, perishable foodyes! Backpack program-distributed, on average, 21 backpacks per week to 54 students-backpacks contained food enough for 9 meals for families on free and reduced lunches to enjoy over the weekends and on breaks, so that they come back to school ready to learncommunity health work -made approximately 190 referrals to social, financial, insurance navigators, and community resources in 2017fresh food pantry -the fresh food pantry is a fresh produce distribution network that was established in 2015 to extend the reach of the surplus produce that cfc was recovering to reach low-income houses throughout the county. The program is comprised of two distribution approaches: 1) weekly orders of fresh food that are delivered to established emergency feeding sites (pantries and soup kitchens); 2) disbursed community sites, including: senior housing facilities, community centers, youth centers, libraries, head start sites and health centers. Those sites are served through a combination of weekly orders and pop-up produce market. ? Procurement: we work with 11 farms in rensselaer, saratoga, and washington counties to manage their surplus food. In 2017 we recovered 18,890 lbs. Of farm fresh food; in 2018, our goal is to increase recovered produce to 32,000 lbs. ? Distribution: 1,400 households served through pop-up produce markets throughout washington county over
