Mission: Wisconsin SMP is a program of the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups. Staffed by a project director, a volunteer coordinator, a trainer, and volunteers, Wisconsin SMP is one of the oldest federally funded “fraud buster” programs in the country. The project is dedicated to stopping healthcare fraud, waste and abuse. This project aims to educate Medicare beneficiaries how to prevent, detect, and report healthcare fraud.
Results: In 2013, the 54 Senior Medicare Patrol Projects (one being the Wisconsin SMP) had 5,406 active volunteers, a five-percent increase from 2012. SMP staff and volunteers educated beneficiaries in 14,924 group education sessions. The sessions were attended by 501,405 beneficiaries. SMPs held 148,235 one-on-one counseling sessions.
