Mission: To provide membership and the journal clay and clay minerals as a forum for dissemination of information and free exchange of ideas relating to clay science, and publication of current technical educational and scientific research papers in clay science. There were 331 members in 2017.
Programs: Bimonthly journal publication of current technical educational and scientific research papers in clay science for direct distribution to cms members, the public, educational institutions, and commercial organizations. Members bought 271, and 145 were bought by libraries/educational institutions. Making non-journal publications (i. E, workbooks, annual abstract books, text books, audio visual sets and inza publications) produced by the cms available to the general public; and arranging to sell relevant books from other publishers at a discount to cms members. Cms receives one full page for society news and advertisements in each issue. Six issues were published in 2017, providing a forum for scientific commentary, interviews with clay scientists, announcements of meetings, publications, grants, society news, etc. Elements is sent to approximately 331 cms members and 145 cms institutional subscribers. Print version of elements are sent to more than 8,000 unique members of the 13 participating geoscience societies in 94 countries. More than 1,410 libraries, organizations, and policy makers also receive it as either a companion to their subscription to one of the societies' journals or as a complimentary mailing.
source clays respository: the society supports the source clays repository (housed at purdue university since 2002), which makes small amounts of homogeneous clays available for research purposes.
grants:cms student research grants provide support for worthy graduate level research in clay science. In 2017, five (5) grants were awarded. Cms student travel grants provide support for students for clay mineralogy who are presenting a paper at the meeting. In 2017, eight (8) travel grants were awarded. Cms professional awards provide honoraria for distinguished speakers at the cms annual meeting. In 2017 there were two (2) awards.
society works:the society works to increase interactions and participation with all countries. The society has active participation from clay scientists in canada, japan, and in eastern and western europe, but less interaction with scientists in many other parts of the world. The society donates subscriptions to underserved libraries if requested. The society holds a bi-annual "reynolds cup" competition. There is no participation fee and samples are shipped free to any organization that requests them. Annual meeting, the clay conference: a forum for the free exchange of ideas relating to clay science and providing awards for best student papers and posters and honoraria for distinguished speakers. Aipea and agiassociation international pour l'etude des argiles (aipea) is an international clay organization. All north american members of the cms are automatically members of aipea, with the cms paying dues on behalf of its members. The cms joined the american geological institute (agi) in 1995. Forty-three other earth science organizations belong to agi. Agi "provides information services to a worldwide geoscience community, coordinates improvements in earth science education, offers scholarships to minority students, and works to increase public awareness of the vital role geology plays in our society".
