Mission: The mission of City Arts is to create and promote high quality community art that enriches and enlivens neighborhoods. City Arts accomplishes its mission by engaging residents in conceiving artworks that reflect neighborhood history and culture; teaching and mentoring talented student artists through paid apprenticeships; and offering community art appreciation and education programs for people of all ages.
Programs: City arts undertook or completed the installation of several large scale works of community art in the eastern market, anacostia waterfront and chinatown neighborhoods. The urban arts mentoring program involved several district youth working on a number of projects including:11 students participated in 5 sessions of free workshops at a local middle school on a design for a mural on healthy living along with 20 dc resident volunteers,15 dc youth, participated in 4 free workshops to design new signage for a local nonprofit as well as beautifying a wheelchair accessible path with mosaic pavers 10 youth and 8 adults participated in a 5 session free workshop series focused on building community through intergenerational art making experiences at a local apartment community. Youth apprentice also worked directly with a teaching artist to design 2 murals for local churches and to present their own original work through video blogs and a group exhibition.
