Mission: Our mission statement is: "Empowering citizens to shape vibrant communities in balance with nature." Blaine County is expected to add more than 12,000 residents by 2025, which represents approximately 5,000 additional homes and 9,000 more vehicles on our roadways. We work to ensure that growth and development do not adversely affect our community by advocating that Smart Growth Principles and citizens'' values, such as wildlife preservation and water conservation, are reflected in new developments and codified into law for future developments.
Programs: We serve as a watchdog and citizens' voice at the table during the planning process to advocate for well-planned growth that is built upon regional cooperation and led by transparent and fair government. We have two full-time employees and one part-time employee whose work includes examining pending developments and measuring them against Smart Growth Principles and community values, meeting with developers to help mold projects into valuable community assets that mitigate potential problems, advising local governments on Smart Growth Principles, reporting on growth and development issues to our members and the public, working to codify Smart Growth Principles into law and serving as a reliable and authoritative source of information about proposed developments. We also serve as a regional collaborator on a number of projects related to Smart Growth. We are chairing Sustain Blaine, a collaboration of diverse community members working to develop an economic strategy for all of Blaine County. We host the annual Sun Valley Sustainability Conference in partnership with the Environmental Resource Center and Developing Green. We are helping fund the USGS Water Study, which is analyzing trends in groundwater and surface water for the Wood River Valley. We worked with Blaine County Citizens for Water and Wildlife to pass Proposition 1, the 2-year Land, Water and Wildlife Levy, in the November 2008 election and remain involved with its implementation.
