Mission: On December 24, 1985, Christ House opened its doors to provide comprehensive health care for sick, homeless persons, while assisting them in addressing critical issues to help break the cycle of homelessness. Hospitals treat the homeless for emergencies, but a lack of continuity in care forces them to return to the street where they cannot rest and recuperate. Christ House is a place where these chronically ill, homeless men and women can receive plenty of rest, nutritious meals, medical care and social services.
Geographic areas served: Washington DC
Programs: Staff physicians, a nurse practitioner, and a nursing staff provide 24-hour medical care, evaluate and treat patients, change dressings and administer medications. Usually, patients suffer from more than one medical problem, often complicated by drug and/or alcohol addictions and/or mental illness. In addition to on-site care, the staff also makes special arrangements for hospitalization, visits to medical specialists, and follow-up care as needed.
Christ House employs a team of licensed social workers and case managers, who strive to enhance the recovery-physical, mental, and spiritual-of Christ House patients. They may offer assistance in obtaining benefits and appropriate housing upon patient discharge. The Patient Activities Coordinator offers a wide array of activities that build self-esteem, social awareness, and a spirit of cooperation and community. The pastoral staff also offers a presence to the patients who are suffering from multiple and complex losses.
