children's mercy hospital (cmh) is dedicated to becoming a leader in pediatric translational research. A recent strategic planning initiative established the children's research institute to focus on research and research infrastructure. Cmh initiated a planning process in preparation for making a commitment of a nearly $200 million to the construction of a new research building. Cmh has already invested $4. 1 million on design of the new building as part of the preparation. This commitment will lead to breakthroughs in treating, diagnosing and preventing complex childhood diseases. Research conducted today at cmh includes basic science and clinical research in numerous areas including pharmacology, cancer, cardiology, genetic diseases and health outcomes. Areas of research strength include clinical pharmacology and therapeutic innovation, genomics medicine, health services and outcomes and innovations in health care delivery. The children's research institute occupies about 3% of the space on the main campus and is 3% of the total annual operating budget. Children's mercy spent $43. 9 million in the year ended june 30, 2017 on research and per information from the nih reporter received more than $4. 5 million in nih funding in this same time period. More than 900 publications were accepted and/or published. The children's research institute provides seed funding to investigators with internal competitive grant programs such as the midwest cancer alliance and the katherine berry richardson (kbr) fund, with expectations that this funding will lead to applications for externally funded grant programs in the future.
