Mission: Children of bellevue is a non-profit organization founded in 1949 to initiate, fund and develop special programs and act as an advocate for children and their families within bellevue hospital center.
Programs: See schedule ovideo interaction project: by 4th grade, nearly half of low income children read below grade level representing nothing short of a public health and education crisis. There are vast gaps in development, school-readiness, and long term educational achievement between children growing up in poverty and those raised in household with more resources. Decades of scientific research have proven that the origin of poverty-related disparities can be traced in large part of the period from birth to 5 years of age, during which low-income children have dramatically reduced exposure to the experiences necessary for optimal brain development. The video interaction project (vip) is a unique and innovative approach to lessening disparities through guided parent-child interactions during pediatric visits that foster optimal cognitive, linguistic, and social development. Vip takes place within the bellevue project for early language, literacy and education success (the belle project)poverty is strongly related to disparities in early child development, school readiness and educational achievement, and children from poorer homes are the greatest risk for entering school without the foundation necessary to succeed. At the bellevue hospital center, we have shown that pediatric primary care provides a significant opportunity for innovative, population-wide, low cost, early-childhood intervention because of the frequency and near universality of visits (due to school immunization requirements), the close relationship between parents and primary care providers, and the lack of need for additional travel vip sessions take place when the child is brought to the hospital for its check-up. The core component involves making videotapes of parents and children engaging in play, which the parent then reviews with a developmental specialist, that specialist works from a curriculum that helps them guide the parent to improve cognitive, language and social development. The curriculum includes understanding and anticipating the baby's developmental progress, understanding the baby's temperament, learning to read the baby's clues, and engaging the baby verbally through pretend play and shared reading. Vip begins at the first visit to the pediatrician at age 2 weeks, and ends with an exit session at 54 months (4 years old) vip coincides with pediatric well visits from birth until a child is 5 years old. These visits represent an exciting and underutilized opportunity to engage in preventive efforts with families, due to the 13-15 regularly scheduled "check-ups" that all must attend for their children to receive the immunizations and screening necessary to enter school. Vip builds on reach out and read (another cob core program) during visits to the pediatric clinic. An interventionist (an individual with a child life or related background) meets with families for approximately 25 minutes while they wait to see their pediatric health care provider. The core component of vip involves the interventionist making video recordings of parents and their children engaging in play and/or reading aloud. The parent then reviews this video with the interventionist, who guides the parent towards better understanding and improving interactions with their child learning materials, including toys for pretending together and books for reading aloud, are given to parents to take home. These materials have been specifically selected to promote parent-child engagement in activities that support child development. Because vip takes place in the healthcare setting, costs are dramatically reduced ($150/child/year) when compared to preventive programs taking place in other settings, such as home visitation or early education. This means more families can be reached at 1/100 to 1/10 of the cost, and demonstrates the potential for vip to be provided for at-risk children across the population.

The frances l loeb center, located on the first floor of bellevue hospital, is the heart of all of cob's child protection programs. It is a safe haven for doctors, nurses, social workers, patients and their families to come and discuss issues. As seen on law and order svu, there are special interview rooms where a child can be interviewed by a trained expert while people from other agencies observe through one-way glass. This prevents a child from reliving an ordeal more times than necessary. In other child protection programs, there can be up to 15 professionals who speak with the child, at the loeb center there is just one.
the other program services include adolescent and child psychiatry reach out and read, and social work.
