Situated on almost 200 acres is the forever home for 30 horses, 5 donkeys, over 100 goats as well as a few cows, pigs, sheep and birds. This sanctuary is owned and operated by one of the most beautiful families on this planet. They pour their heart and souls into the animals and the land that keeps them to ensure they have the best, most comfortable retirement.
I sent money to a nearby horse dealer in early September 2023 to pay the ransom for a fully blind Belgian draft horse. The bailout was contacted by CHFS who offered him (Fletcher) a home. Since that time, I have been in regular contact with CHFS as they have now accepted THREE more horses from that bailout. Three more lives saved from the slaughter pipeline.
This sanctuary has a lot of history in rescue before I found them. But I know that draft horse rescue was their initiative when they decided to become a horse rescue and apply for the 501c3. They saved seven horses from Bastrop, LA who were direct ship to Mexico to be slaughtered, hauled them to NY and gave them the best, and probably only, good years of their lives. They also network with the Amish communities around them to offer them another option to give their work horses a soft landing rather than taking them to auction. These are genuinely amazing people who sacrifice everyday to heed the call of each animal’s SOS and provide safety and rehabilitation.
Below are a few pictures of some of the horses I sponsor. The skinny standardbred probably didn’t have another week of life in him until CHFS stepped in to rescue him. He has been with them for three weeks as of the time of this post. He is the see and eye for the Percheron draft. Also pictured is Fletcher with NaLady (outside the stall) and Walter the goat.
