Causes: Crime & Law, Legal Services
Mission: To expand access to legal representation and rights in south carolina.
Programs: Cla provides legal representation to those who do not qualify for free legal representation but who cannot afford a private attorney. We provide services on a sliding scale, where a client's fees are determined by income and family size. In 2017, we closed 138 matters and preserved 483,723 in assets for low and moderate income families. We also kept 6 families in their home, obtained an emergency guardianship for a son over his incapacitated mother, obtained an order of protection for a victim of domestic violence and achieved other non-monetary outcomes.
in 2017, cla launched a language access project to research and prepare a report on access to interpreters and translators in south carolina courts for limited english proficiency (lep) parties. In 2017, cla, submitted foia requests to the clerks of court of each of the 46 counties in south carolina as well as the supreme court of south carolina's court administration, hosted three volunteer law student externs who have observed court, completed legal research, and organized and reviewed foia productions under the supervision of a cla attorney, conducted approximately 80 court observations, and consulted with the south carolina access to justice commission, as well as a dozen other stakeholders from nonprofits and immigrant communities across the state.
