Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Childhood Obesity, Public & Societal Benefit

Mission: Changelab solutions creates innovative laws and policies to ensure everyday health for all, whether that's providing access to affordable, healthy food and beverages, creating safe opportunities for physical activity,(continued on schedule o)

Programs: Public health workforce capacity building: changelab solutions builds the capacity of the public health workforce to use the tools of law and policy to improve population health. One of the key ways we do this is through a cooperative agreement with the centers for disease control and prevention. A few examples of the more than 50 projects completed over the past 5 years include launching the public health law academy - a free on-line and on-demand training website with nearly a dozen interactive and professionally produced trainings covering the basics of public health law, legal epidemiology, and other hot topics related to public health law and policy; and developing extensive new datasets coding the laws of all 50 states across a variety of issues such as childhood behavioral health, diabetes prevention programs, the prevention of morbidity and mortality associated with opioid use, and return-to-learn protocols after traumatic brain injuries.

food systems: changelab solutions develops model policies and "how to" resources that serve the stakeholders from small community gardeners, to mom 'n pop grocers, to huge institutional purchasers. Whenever possible, we focus the full impact of food systems on health and nutrition, local economies, environmental sustainability, workplace conditions from migrant laborers to restaurant servers, animal welfare and diversity in business owners and operators.

active living: changelab solutions provides practical tools to guide the development of land use plans and transportation systems which address the needs of all persons - especially low-income and historically marginalized communities. These include policies related to "complete streets," safe routes to schools, the shared use of school playgrounds for community parks, and a playbook on ensuring parks are accessible, safe, and meet the needs of families.

ChangeLab Solutions is an unusual -- and extremely valuable -- institution. On the one hand, it's a think tank, bringing together professors, advocates, researchers and policy wonks to put together the best available model policies to address the most urgent public heath crises of our time: the epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the ongoing scourge of tobacco use, etc. But ChangeLab then takes those policies and helps governments implement them, providing technical assistance at all steps. They deploy their resources wisely, through webinars and over the phone -- and they have national reach as well as local expertise. For those seeking a public health NGO, this is one very worthy recipient.

While ChangeLabs has created a coordinated effort to address the nutritional needs of children, there is a deeply concerning campaign that this group is actively manipulating municipalities with incomplete and defective information in order to push a specific agenda of prohibition of the use of personal vaping devices by adults. The type of amendments being pushed are complete prohibition within sight of any other person- indoors and out.

Misinformation, out-of-date data and opinions, not the actual studies themselves are being used. Vaping is a smokeless alternative for existing adult combustion tobacco cigarette smokers.

It is disingenuous for a group who's mission is to improve the quality of life for residents to actively prevent alternatives that are vastly safer than the analog.

Further, it is an affront to CA taxpayers to be funding such a campaign.
