Mission: The Y is one of the Central Coast’s leading nonprofits, strengthening local communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Our 5 local YMCA branches engage the Central Coast’s men, women and children – regardless of age, income or background – to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve the Central Coast’s health and well-being, and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Firmly anchored in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties, the Y has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. www.centralcoastymca.org
Results: In 2010, Central Coast YMCA provided over $450,000 in financial assistance to families in our communities in order to make sure everyone has access to programs that promote youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Target demographics: Central Coast YMCA serves almost 28,000 men, women and children of every age, race and background.
Programs: Healthy living the y is a leading voice on health and well-being. We bring families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. As a result, 28,541 people in our community are receiving the support, guidance, and resources they need to achieve greater health in spirit, mind, and body. This is particularly important as our nation struggles with an obesity crisis, families struggle with work/life balance, and individuals search for personal fulfillment. Our programs are accessible, affordable, and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities, and income levels. In 2014, we provided $316,424 in financial assistance to people who otherwise would have faced economic barriers to participation.
youth development our ymca is committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That's why we help young people cultivate the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, and educational achievement. Our ymca programs, such as afterschool enrichment, day camps and recreation programs in public housing communities, offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical, and emotional growth. We provide subsidies and direct financial assistance that make participation possible for 42% percent of the young people we engage. In 2014, we involved 12,851 youth under age 18.
sports and recreationthe y believes that physical activity is a key ingredient to good health and well-being. We also believe that children need opportunities to build confidence, develop teamwork skills and have fun. That's why we provide sports, swimming and recreation programs for children of all ages as well as families. At the y, everyone plays, with no try-outs or pre-determined skill levels. We give children the opportunity to learn new skills, try new activities and stay active. Over 421 people volunteer as coaches and instructors, providing positive adult role models for youth. In 2014, 11,353 youth participated in sports activities at the y.
