Mission: The center for sustainable shale development (cssd) brings together environmental, industry and community organizations committed to ensuring the highest level of environmental and community responsibility when a decision is made to develop and extract shale gas. We define and periodically update environmental performance standards to ensure continuous improvement and best practice, and certify and monitor responsible operations that meet those standards.
Programs: In january 2014, cssd made its "certificate of operational excellence" available to shale gas operators in the appalachian basin. Shale gas operators can earn cssd certification by demonstrating conformance to cssd's fifteen (15) environmental performance standards intended to reduce impacts to air, water and climate. Certification provides shale gas operators the opportunity to demonstrate leadership and earn a social license by implementing the highest levels of environmental performance. Cssd's certification program provides environmental and community organizations with an opportunity to insist on higher expectations and performance throughout the industry. In september 2014, cssd certified its first shale gas operator with applications pending for 2015.
in 2014, cssd expanded the scope of its wastewater treatment performance standard. Cssd's performance standards committee, comprised of environmental and industry representatives, unanimously agreed on a performance standard that involves multiple treatment methods, a testing program to monitor the composition of the wastewater and due diligence requirements such as reviewing a treatment facility's historical and ongoing performance. The performance standards committee explored regional and national policies and practices, current regulations and available treatment technologies to identify a "best available treatment". In december 2014, cssd's board of directors, comprised of environmental, industry and "non-aligned" individuals unanimously approved the performance standard for adoption.
in february 2014, cssd hired its first full-time executive director charged with overseeing performance standards development and the certification program, developing a five year strategic plan, establishing budgetary requirements and achieving annual operational goals.
