Providing excellent clinical and service quality, offering compassionate care, and supporting research and medical education are essential to our mission. This mission is founded in the ethical and cultural precepts of the judaic tradition, which inspires devotion to the art and science of healing, and to the care we give to our patients and staff.
Programs: Clinical care:a non-profit institution founded by the community in 1902, cedars-sinai provides a wide spectrum of medical services, and is one of the leading specialty referral centers for the region. From ongoing primary care to highly specialized care, cedars-sinai serves patients from local communities, as well as from throughout california, the nation and the world. (see schedule o for continuation)(continued)in fiscal year 2017, cedars-sinai had 260,550 inpatient days (caring for approximately 714 per day), and 765,458 outpatient visits (caring for approximately 2,097 per day). There were 50,446 inpatient admissions, and 92,109 emergency department visits. All emergency department patients are treated regardless of their ability to pay. Cedars-sinai subsidizes the government by covering the financial shortfall of caring for these patients. Cedars-sinai's emergency department serves the entire region as one of only four remaining level i trauma centers in los angeles county (and the only one not operated by the government), with staffing and technology to treat the most severely injured accident and natural disaster victims. As one of the largest academic medical centers in the western united states, cedars-sinai provides many highly specialized services for the larger region that are not available at most other hospitals in the region, and which require cedars-sinai to maintain a significant costly infrastructure of technology and expert staffing. For example, in calendar year 2017, cedars-sinai performed 104 heart transplants. Patients with advanced heart disease come to cedars-sinai because of the expertise of its cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, and because cedars-sinai has the infrastructure to offer heart transplants as well as newer technologies to treat advanced heart disease. Cedars-sinai's services for cancer patients are similarly broad in scope and size: for the past several years, we have cared for more inpatients with cancer (medical and surgical cases) than any other hospital in los angeles county. In fiscal year 2017, cedars-sinai treated 3,206 cancer inpatient visits and 83,413 cancer outpatient visits.
research:cedars-sinai scientists and physician-researchers are currently conducting more than 1,665 studies to discover and advance new treatments to benefit patients suffering from heart disease, brain disorders, cancer and innumerable other conditions. Cedars-sinai is also pioneering research that improves the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery. (see schedule o for continuation)(continued)while some of these research projects are funded in part or in whole by funds from the national institutes of health or other government agencies, many are funded by cedars-sinai, especially seed grants to support innovative new research. In fiscal year 2017, cedars-sinai provided $91,479,304 toward research projects, while nih and other grants provided $125,431,581. Among the specific research projects at cedars-sinai in fiscal year 2017: the discovery of a new way to type tumor cells to determine which patients will develop aggressive forms of prostate cancer; pioneering studies into drugs that target nonalcoholic fatty liver disease; using deadly bacteria as a lifesaving treatment for kidney transplant patients to significantly reduce post-transplant rejection; the finding that cigarette smoking can cause pancreatic cancer, in addition to damaging the lungs; employing virtual reality and fitness trackers to protect people from high blood pressure by successfully encouraging them to reduce their salt intake, and also alleviate stress; examined pregnant women who experience spontaneous preterm delivery to find they may face heightened danger of cardiovascular disease, which may increase understanding of the mechanisms responsible for preterm delivery; found that diabetic patients benefit from cutting off specific nerves to the kidney to increase insulin's effectiveness in the liver.
training for physicians and other health professionals:with severe projected shortages of physicians, nurses and other health professionals facing the nation, cedars-sinai's training and education programs have become more important to the health of the nation than ever before. In fiscal year 2017, cedars-sinai's net cost of providing these training programs was $72,772,743. (see schedule o for continuation)(continued)more than 400 medical residents and fellows were trained in primary care, specialty and subspecialty areas at cedars-sinai in fiscal year 2017. In addition, cedars-sinai's brawerman nursing institute trained more than 800 nurses in fiscal year 2017, helping to address the nation's shortage of nurses, especially those with advanced specialty training in such areas as neonatal care, oncology nursing and critical care nursing.
