Mission: Cascade locks park association is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1989. The organization's mission is to preserve, protect, and promote the industrial and cultural heritage of the mustill family store & home and the cascade locks park along locks 10-16 of the ohio & erie canal.
Programs: Clpa continues to provide educational tours to over 800 local school children with historical education tours, these tours include important local and ohio history about the industrial cascade valley, ohio & erie canal and the mustill store. Cpla has expanded education to include educational walks for adults that inform guests on the mustill site and cascade valley history. With the growth of the parks pollinator gardens, we have expanded programming to include bug/pollinator education. The goal is to educate our neighbors and community on the unique beginnings of akron industrial and cultural heritage. Clpa also helps over 7,000 guests who visit the museum discover interesting facts about akron's past and the current ocit project.
funding helps maintain clpa's operations, museum/store/information center. The cascade valley park offers a vibrant urban green space for neighbors and guests using the towpath trail. Tuesday through sunday, april through october the mustill store museum provides the opportunity for our guests to view historical information on the canal, the cascade valley and early akron, the city of akron and wayfinding. We help the park to be a more welcoming, informative, and inviting spot for visitors. During the summer on fridays we welcome guests and neighbors to questing demonstrations provided by volunteers of the cvnp, have live music and cookouts, all at no cost to our guests. The mustill museum plays host to the ocit tours that help neighbors and our community understand the significance, engineering and goals of the cso project. We also work with other organizations and have activities that get our neighbors out and enjoying nature. Canal cleanup days are organized and staged along the cascade valley.
funding makes the continued operation of the mustill store museum/schumacher mill site and educational programming possible. Projects for improving our organization are significant in clpa's strategy. A footbridge across the canal at lock 15 was completed in spring of 2017 allowing a pedestrian link to the renovated cascade lofts. A garden memorializing the people who were key in the creation of the written history and restoration of the cascade valley and mustill properties was completed. This project includes the use of a old mill stone and native ohio woodland plants saved from a property that was undergoing commercial development. The garden is located on the mustill home and store site. A monarch waystation is in its second season at the schumacher mill site, certification will be applied for and it will be used in tours and education.
