Mission: To empower people to explore and express their voices through imaginative learning and the literary arts
Programs: Children's & family programs - 4,000 people participated in programs that encourage families to learn together or children to benefit from learning new things. The year-round tutoring program for grades k-12 provided weekly one-on-one tutoring sessions for children who need help with reading, writing, or math. Children found that learning can be fun in educational workshops involving reading, writing, math, and other topics, and camp carnegie's half-day summer camps provided high quality, academic enrichment activities in a fun, fast-paced environment. Family fun and learning nights offered free dinner and learning activities that the entire family could enjoy, all based around a central theme. The carnegie center also offered outreach programs in local schools, often providing free books and connecting children with published authors. Through our outdoor reading room in triangle park, children's events in schools, and family literacy programs in our building, we gave away 8,400 free books to children and adults. College mentoring helped high school upper classman prepare college applications and seek financial assistance or scholarships. Of the overall children's and family program participants, 74% came from low income homes, and 69% are minorities. A majority of program expenses were funded by grants and community contributions, as nearly all of the children's and family programs were offered at no cost. For those programs with a minimal fee, scholarships were available for all children from low income families.
adult workshops - each season, we offered a new line-up of workshops in writing, world languages, business topics, and others. One-on-one writer mentoring was offered year-round for the individual hoping to someday be published, as well as the person wanting to update her resume or demonstrate better writing skills on the job. We offered adult literacy mentoring for individuals planning to take the g. E. D. Test or who needed help with basic literacy skills. Professional development seminar topics included personal finances and grantwriting. Some of our workshops took place in outreach locations, including library branches, bookstores, and the local senior citizens center. Our annual writing conference featured nationally-recognized authors. The carnegie center author academy provided one-on-one mentoring, special workshops, and other support over a 9-month period. We served almost 3,300 adults in these programs. A majority of revenue came from grant funds and contributions so that we could hire qualified instructors while maintaining affordable fees. Scholarship rates were given to every person in need.
arts engagement programs - the cornerstone of the center's arts engagement programs were literary art programs, and we promoted kentucky writers through all that we did. The kentucky great writers series and other literary readings took place throughout the year. This year, we inducted five writers into the kentucky writers hall of fame, housed at the carnegie center. We helped emerging writers become noticed through writing contests in a variety of forms and genres. The center was the home site for the kentucky women writers conference and was used for book launches by local authors and publishers. Many art programs were family-friendly and some specifically targeted children, such as our youth meeting authors program. The center also participated in five local downtown gallery hops to promote visual arts, and incorporated musical and theatrical performances into other programs such as carnegie classics. Last year, free art admission was provided to more than 10,000 people, thanks to support from grant funds and contributions from the community.
the center offers additional arts programs, such as art exhibits, photography workshops, and musical performances. During the fiscal year, we increasingly became a premiere venue for new book launches by local authors.
