I am an R.N. in the U.S.A. and I have just had first hand experience volunteering with CapraCare in Fonfrede, Haiti.
I recently spent a week with the professional team and the community volunteers at the CapraCare Clinic.
This a a dynamic, progressive young team who's vision goes far beyond even the important day to day patient encounters at the clinic.
They reach out to neighboring areas providing health education , examinations and screening by way of their mobile clinics. With these outreach programs they are touching a demographic that has not had access to any kind of health care or education.
Their prevention programs are instrumental in educating the communities in the basic requirements of good health. Hand washing, nutrition, family planning, vaccinations, CPR, dental hygiene.
They educate about sexually transmitted diseases, HPV, cervical cancer and the importance of screenings. Provide condoms.
They provide free healthcare to any person coming by their clinic.
They train and educate eager young Community Health Workers to assist with the needs of the community.
They implemented Help End the Cycle (HEC), which has sponsors for local children to attend school.
Their comprehensive and inclusive approach to improving and saving lives is actually more forward thinking than some developed countries. For instance providing acupuncture for patients waiting to be screened or for their results. Using their space and staff to provide an after school program, teaching the children and locals English and computer skills.

CapraCare is a wonderful grassroots organization that is dedicated to providing mental health care and health education to Fonfrede, Haiti by training their local volunteers the skills needed to help their friends, neighbors, families, and ultimately themselves to learn how to cope with their daily living conditions as the country rebuilds itself. By training those who live in those very same communities, CapraCare is able to leave a lasting effect that will spread not only within the village but through the rest of the country. I would highly recommend to everyone to support this wonderful organization whether through monetary donations or by offering your skills and/or services. All I'm sure would be greatly appreciated.
