capital adaptive rowing:capital rowing club, through the capital adaptive rowing program, provides our area's veterans and wounded warriors and civilians with a variety of disabilities with a new opportunity for athletic and social development through the sport of adaptive rowing in a supportive community setting. Because capital adaptive has built strong partnerships with the u. S. Paralympic military program (mpp), the vamc, the national rehabilitation hospital (nrh), walter reed army medical center (wramc), fort belvoir, and the national naval medical center (nnmc), veterans and returning active-duty wounded warriors throughout the washington metropolitan area enjoy access to capital's boathouse on the anacostia river and experience the river through an exciting sport. This provides a unique opportunity for physical, cognitive, and social development for the area's veteran and active-duty population who get to work closely with capital rowing club's civilian population. The program is offered year-round: three times per week in the six cold-weather months, and three times per week during the six months suitable for on-the-water training (approximately may 1 through october 31). Capital adaptive also offers structured programs on request to the mpp, nrh, and the vamc for athletes not at liberty to travel to our boathouse on their own. In addition to the physical therapeutic benefits, rowing with capital adaptive provides valuable social interactions in a team setting to athletes with disabilities. The organization and other local rowing clubs incorporated adaptive rowing events into their annual regattas, where the adaptive athletes, their friends, and families enjoyed tremendous support and camaraderie while racing and attending post-regatta social events. Since 2010, capital adaptive built a roster of approximately ten athletes who competed in numerous regattas and indoor rowing competitions, and won medals in a number of adaptive events. The organization has used grant support and donations made to the club to purchase adaptive boats, oars, and safety equipment to make the program possible.
