The Cancer Resource Center of the Northern Virginia Hospital Center came in to my life when I was facing one of the biggest challenges of my life, surgery for breast cancer. My Mother had died of breast cancer and all I could see were years of surgery, chemotherapy, wasting away and death. I was met by the patient navigator both before and after surgery. As I recovered, I was invited to join a breast cancer support group. I was taught about the side effects of chemo and things to help myself feel better. Most important I learned about a "New Normal," for me and how I could get there. I had opportunities to participate in music and art therapies. I was was shown how to wear make-up in a different way. The most important thing I learned was that I could live my life to the fullest going forward and that there would always be people to help deal with what ever challenges came in the future.
