Mission: To empower cancer patients and their caregivers to take control over their diagnoses from the moment they learn they have cancer (or a recurrence) through ten years of follow-up care. Having a plan of attack, the means to stay organized and access to appropriate resources and information is half the battle. CANCER101 (C101) meets the cancer patient on the front line and turns a chaotic experience into a calm and organized plan of attack. And just as important, C101 is there after the treatments are over to help survivors manage important post-treatment appointments, medications and survivorship issues.
Results: By July 2010, CANCER101 will have given away over 100,000 CANCER101 Planners to people in need. This year we expanded from a breast resource to one that will help all cancer patients.
Target demographics: Women and men affected by cancer in all demographics
Direct beneficiaries per year: 60,000+
Geographic areas served: National
Programs: C101 provides the tools and resources that patients and caregivers need to make sense of the overwhelming information and difficult emotions that accompany a cancer diagnosis. This important information is made available in three ways: THE CANCER101 PLANNER AND FIVE-POCKET FOLDER: Our main program, the three-ring, tabbed notebook includes everything a patient and their caregiver need to stay organized during treatments and ten years of follow-up appointments. Following the first appointment with an oncology specialist, patients leave their cancer center with an essential tool that includes a vetted list of national resources, important questions to ask their health care team, a glossary of medical terminology and a section for tracking medical bills, insurance information, business cards and more. The Planner also includes essential information provided by prominent organizations including: National Cancer Institute (NCI), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups (CCCG).In 2010, patients will be able to download or order a hard copy of tumor-specific information provided by NCI to insert into their Planners. Inserts for nutrition, wellness, fitness, beauty and end-of-life will be available in July 2010. THE WEB SITE, CANCER101.org: Our Web site offers a live calendar of national teleconferences, webinars, annual conferences, and retreats. For our online visitors, C101 offers the same important and essential resources found inside the CANCER101 Planners. LAUNCHING THIS SUMMER 2010! Social Media Campaign: This June 2010, CANCER101 will launch a fully orchestrated social media campaign to include Bogging, Facebook, Twitter and You-Tube. CANCER101 will offer non-medical tips to help patients, caregivers, survivors, healthcare professionals and C101 Lifesavers*. Online Planner: C101 will launch this August its free online planner and smart phone application. Patients and caregivers will be able to access and log their essential information from virtually anywhere. *C101 Lifesaver: This new initiative invites cancer patients to learn all they can about their cancer and teach family and friends about early detection and prevention. This is offered to people with cancers that can be detected early and potentially prevented. They include breast, lung, colon, cervical and prostate. Wellness Booklets: This July, C101 will offer booklets to planner recipients to personalize their planners with wellness information to include complementary therapies, fitness, nutrition, beauty and caregiver support to name a few.
