Programs: The waterfowl and wetlands department continues to be productive despite difficult economic times. In the last 20 years, we have completed more than 1,200 projects to protect, restore, and enhance more than 430,000 acres of total wetland, riparian, and grassland habitat. Our banding crews have marked in excess of 235,000 waterfowl, while our wood duck program has hatched nearly 772,000 wood ducks.
california waterfowl's youth and education department continued to deliver the junior duck stamp program, youth hunt program, and summer camps and youth waterfowl banding activities. Roughly 275,000 children, young adults, and families benefit from california waterfowl sponsored education programs each year, which helps create a better understanding of biology, conservation, and the value of waterfowl, wetlands, and our outdoor heritage. All of our efforts are supported largely by donations and the work of over 1,500 dedicated and tireless volunteers. In 2016, cwa taught 6,431 students about wetlands, 1,761 students about wood ducks and brought 1,590 students out to the marsh to learn about wetlands.
policy - california waterfowl is working to ensure that water is available for wetland restoration and management during these times of competing demands for a limited resource. We are working to solidify water supplies for refuges as well as ensure waterfowl are considered in ongoing delta planning processes, such as the bay delta conservation plan. California waterfowl teamed with the grasslands water district and partners in the central valley joint venture to coordinate and increase efforts to secure legislatively-mandated central valley improvement act (cvpia) water for private and public wetlands throughout the valley.
