Mission: Since 1983, CANHR has been dedicated to fighting elder abuse and protecting the rights of California's long term care consumers. Through community education, legislation and litigation, it has been CANHR's goal to remind decision makers of what needs to be done to improve the lives of long term care consumers; that this "forgotten" population includes our mothers and fathers, our husbands and wives, our brothers and sisters, and that their suffering is our shame.
Programs: Pre-Placement Counseling:
CANHR provides information on alternatives to nursing home care, choosing a facility, financial considerations, Medi-Cal eligibility requirements, residents' rights and admission issues.
NursingHomeGuide.org:
CANHR's free, interactive web site provides information on all 1,200+ nursing homes in California, including a profile of services, citations, complaints and deficiencies.
Lawyer Referral Service:
CANHR provides referrals to private attorneys specializing in estate planning for long term care; protective services, including conservatorships and durable powers of attorney for healthcare; and personal injury, wrongful death, and medical malpractice in nursing homes.
Community Education:
CANHR offers presentations and trainings to the public and to social service providers on long term care issues and Medi-Cal.
Legal Services Support:
CANHR supplies technical assistance, advocacy support and training to qualified legal services projects.
CANHR has been invaluable to me. This organization has offered me expert knowledge and assistance in helping navigate social services, dealing with complex government programs and agencies and has found solutions that no one else suggested or seemed aware of. The staff members have been caring and responsive, and to my surprise, free of charge. I’m very grateful for their help.

Their foundation is purely a lawyer referral service in hopes of suing others for "elder abuse". Lawyers pay for referrals from this agency. Over 20% of their operating income is spent on lobbying.
Mr. Johnson, while we do indeed offer legal referrals and support/oppose California legislative matters, we also offer several other services, including free resources and information for long term care consumers. You can find out more through the following link:

We are also not a foundation, we are a non-profit advocacy organization. While we do indeed receive funding through our Legal Referral Service, we also rely on donations to enable us to help low-income Californians.
