Causes: Alumni Associations, Education, Secondary & High Schools
Mission: The mission of the foundation is to support brooklyn technical high school as the premier specialized high school for stem - science, technology, engineering and mathematics by harnessing the intellectual and financial power of tech alumni. We support curriculum and facilities enhancements, faculty support and development and transformational learning experiences for students. We reconnect and engage alumni to support our educational programs and create and sustain partnerships with corporations, universities and industry to benefit brooklyn tech. We celebrate our history and strategically partner with brooklyn tech to sustain our legacy of excellence.
Programs: Brooklyn tech-education support - this program provides direct support to the school for professional workshops and conferences, research and innovative teaching practices, broad, rich curriculum development in stem education, modernization and upgrades to the physical plant reborn for the 21st century with labs and classrooms on par with university and industry standards. The foundation provides on-site assistance in program and partnership development in the following areas:1. Career day: brings 300 alumni to the school to speak to a range of tech classes concentrated in the 19 major areas of stem study. Almost 4800 students benefit from career day; as a result of this day, there are alumni who help establish internships for students and visitation opportunities for faculty. 2. New directions speaker series: the alumni foundation organized and launched a special series of guest lectures by leading thinkers and achievers in the academic and business communities. The series consisted of lectures about groundbreaking research in marine engineering and underwater robotics and other relevant topics. 3. Faculty grants: provided resources to faculty for professional development and classroom enrichment projects. 4. Learning bridge project: partnership with drexel university and pennoni associates. Module implemented in civil engineering and will be introduced to architecture. There is an annual trip to the palmyra-tacony bridge and center. 5. Annual engineers week: week of events centered around engineering and involves professionals and alumni. 6. Con edison: support for the environmental science and engineering lab and extensive internship program. 7. Urban land institute: provides innovative projects for economics classes to create an understanding of urban development. Scholarships: 28 scholarships were awarded to students for fye 6/30/17grants: 98 grants were awarded to faculty for fye 6/30/17
alumni engagement program: - this program fosters ties with its alumni to support educational programs to include the following:homecoming: an annual event that highlights brooklyn tech's educational programs. It involves approximately 500 students as well as current and retired faculty. The ike heller '43 center for computer integrated manufacturing and robotics: a state-of-the art facility for student learning, professional development and career preparation. The center has undergone a number of iterations to make cutting edge technology available to both students and teachers. It provides students and faculty with a high tech, learning environment that meets university and industry standards. In the center, students in the electro-mechanical, industrial design and robotics classes convert computer-assisted designs into three-dimensional prototypes using 3d printers and utilize cnc machines to manufacture the parts. The leandro rizzuto internship program: this program provides students with a variety of internships (paid and unpaid). Alumni affiliated businesses as well as the various partnership organizations work with the foundation to develop job descriptions and candidates for the positions. Partners include con edison, ace mentoring, domingo gonzalez associates, rodale, mancini-duffy; pennoni associates, turner construction and ny institute of technology. National grid middle school stem pipeline program : introduces middle school students to the exciting world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through project based learning and prepares them for the shsat. Ruby engineers - connects current tech female students to our female graduates. Provides sessions on college and career options, resume writing and interviewing and introduces current students to the vast network of women professionals who have graduated from tech. Recent alumni day - alumni who have graduated during the last five years, come back to tech to meet with classes. They discuss college life, career pathways and other post-secondary opportunities. They also discuss how tech prepared them for college study.
the weston research scholars program - this program is designed to provide students with a three-year opportunity to participate in the creation of research projects. The wrsp builds on brooklyn tech's strong stem based curriculum, the exceptional talents of brooklyn tech faculty and students, and the tremendous research opportunities at nyc colleges, universities and research facilities. The program is unique in its structure, incorporating an internal mentor model consisting of brooklyn tech teachers with research experience, a summer institute to prepare students, student research teams, ongoing activiites through the academic year and summer, and external mentors at multiple colleges, universities and research facilities. The students who participate in this program will develop projects that are worthy of submission to the regeneron science talent search, regeneron science and engineering fair, siemens competition and the google science fair. Long island university provides research opportunities for tech students.
