Mission: Our mission at The Boys and Girls Club of Central Appalachia is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Our mission is put to work four and five days a week in five county schools by a core of career professionals who are trained and certified educators. We also collaborate with local groups such as Buchanan County 4-H Extension Office, Virginia Tech, The University of Virginia, Kiwanis, The Buchanan County Public Library and Grundy Police and Fire Departments to provide programming to help our youth improve their lives, build self-esteem, and develop values and skills during their critical period of growth. For many years, Central Appalachia had a thriving economy, dependent in large part on coal production. Over the course of the past decade, however, that economy has faltered due to the declining coal industry and the subsequent rise in unemployment rates. It is increasingly critical that our goals focus on training our young citizens in diverse fields, particularly those dealing with technology, in order to provide them with the necessary skills to compete and succeed in a 21st Century economy.
Results: The Boys and Girls Club of Central Appalachia (BGCCA) is now the largest youth organization in Southwest Virginia with over 1154 members! We operate at five county elementary and middle schools and the Buchanan County Technology and Career Center. Your generosity provides much-needed programming, equipment, instructors and support for the boys and girls of Central Appalachia daily. BGCCA also employs 51 unit directors, teachers, aides and bus drivers, helping boost our local economy. Boys & Girls Club of Central Appalachia has outfitted each of our school sites with multiple LEGO Mindstorm/WeDo2.0 Robots and competition boards for our members to compete in countywide and regional FIRST LEGO League STEAM competitions. This year BGCCA has also introduced Virtual Reality into the classroom, expanding our computer coding and programming, and opening up new worlds for Central Appalachia students.
