Causes: Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Children & Youth
Mission: The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass and MetroWest is to create and support one-to-one, mentoring relationships that ignite the power and potential of youth.
Results: Mentorship is a powerful and beneficial way to alter a young person’s life trajectory—which ultimately benefits everyone by making our economy more inclusive and productive and our society more equitable. 2024 Actual Outcomes were as follows: 61% of children (goal was 40%) were less likely to engage in risky behavior, specifically school discipline. Overall averages were significantly down, with an effect size of -.36. (Effect size is a way to look at the magnitude of the change in scores from Baseline to Follow-up. This score shows that there was a substantive amount of change. Another risky behavior, Bullying, had fewer responses with only 27% reporting improvement, however the significance was also demonstrated with a -1.08 effect size.) As a positive corollary to the reduced Risky Behaviors above, measures capturing Protective Behaviors had a positive effect size of .36, and 80% reporting they feel they have a positive adult in their lives. (63% improved in academic performance, outperforming the goal of 60%; 77% improved educational expectations vs a goal of 65%.)
