Causes: Food, Food Banks & Pantries
Mission: The bemidji community food shelf is a faith-based, caring place that listens for those who are experiencing food insecurity. We work with our partners to be inclusive and to provide fresh, nourishing foods for those living in beltrami county and the bemidji school district.
Programs: Bcfs operated a food shelf serving beltrami county and the bemidji school district, extending into hubbard county. Four hundred volunteers distributed 858,000 pounds of food to households who made a total of 10,178 visits. 39% of those served were children and 62% were native american. There were 2,259 visits by seniors, and 857 by veterans. We partnered with the second harvest north central food bank to distribute nutrition assistance program for seniors (naps) commodities to 140 seniors.
on our farm, we produced nearly 12,000 pounds of produce for distribution to our customers with the help of 300 volunteers. We partnered with the developmental achievement center of bemidji to teach gardening skills to developmentally-challenged individuals. We partnered with the university of minnesota extension to construct a deep winter greenhouse and place raised bed gardens with 30 low-income families, providing soil, plants and assistance, and ending with cooking classes in late fall.
