Nonprofit Overview
Causes: International, International Relief
Mission: To serve impoverished communities and families in nicaragua. Our focus is on the families who live in or near the trash dumps near managua. Generations of families have earned their "living" sifting through other's trash to find anything of value surrounded by fire, smoke, flies, stench and filth. We would like to remove all of the children from this environment and break this cycle of poverty through education and training and to give these families the hope they need to build a better life for themselves, their neighbors and their families.
Programs: We have 21 children who live outside the trash dump who attend a private school, the lighthouse christian academy. They arrive at the safe house prior to sunrise and have breakfast as a group, pick up a lunch and are transported to an all day school across town. They have tutoring for 2 hours in the evening if needed and 15 of our 21 were on honor roll with an 87% being the lowest grade point of any student. All of the children chose to be baptized as a family in 2017 and kara had the privilege of baptizing each of them. We also have two young adults attending college. One is in medical school and the other attends the university of central america. Their success is amazing and brings hope for a changed future for many.
we built an additional 10 homes in the nueva vida trash dump in 2017. We replaced homes built of cardboard, plastic and other items from the trash dump with homes built with metal sheeting walls and roof, concrete floors, electricity and in some cases a covered porch for cooking and laundry. The happiness and pride these families experience owning a home that is safe and dry is overwhelming to watch!
we have two safe houses for some temporary and some permanent housing for children and women who are in crisis. Many times we can help them with the challenges in their situation and reunite the families in a safer, better situation. We also provide emergency medical supplies, food, formula, shoes and clothing to families who are in crisis. It is a comfort to know there is a place to turn when you have no hope!
we also assist numerous mission trips who want to provide aid and enjoyment to those living in the trash dump. We help guide them in many areas as we are extremely familiar with the people and their needs.
