Mission: The Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI, pronounced “bossy”) is a non-profit organization that inspires a movement of women athletes who empower girls and women to take charge of their lives. Through BAWSI, women athletes are mobilized to transform the health and futures of girls, women, and their families in underserved communities. BAWSI’s efforts seek to address the health and lifestyle problems resulting from lack of physical exercise through our BAWSI Girls/BAWSI Women after-school curriculum of innovative activities that make exercise a fun and social outlet for girls and women. Young girls are now sweating their way to good health and positive self-esteem while being shown options for the future that comes from being an empowered woman, including the possibility of attending college. By becoming a member of BAWSI Girls, girls experience the feeling of belonging to something positive that gives them a sense of value. BAWSI Women’s Salud Por Vida program is a weekly fitness and nutrition program taught to encourage the moms of BAWSI Girls and other women in the community to exercise alongside their daughters and peers. Through the co-location of our BAWSI Girls and Salud por Vida programs in schools, mothers and daughters are able to reinforce each other’s constructive lifestyle changes at home while becoming living examples for family members and the community at-large.
