Causes: Children & Youth, Youth Development Programs
Mission: Austin voices for education and youth creates community collaboration to strengthen families, support kids and improve schools. We believe our public schools can serve as powerful hubs for bringing neighborhoods, families and students together to achieve positive change.
Programs: Vertical teams: eastside vertical team: since 2011, avey has worked with schools in the eastside vertical team to facilitate community and partner engagement. This includes overseeing the development of a new early childhood center at the former allan elementary campus in 2015. Reagan vertical team: avey has been working since 2007 to transform schools in the st. John and other areas that feed into reagan high school. In 2015, avey partnered with education austin to expand community school development to four elementary schools that feed reagan, in addition to supporting webb ms and reagan hs. Lanier vertical team: through a federal full service community schools grant, avey began work in the lanier vertical team in 2015. Four schools are in the project: lanier hs, burnet ms, cook es, and wooldridge es. The goal is to provide wraparound services for families and to support the creation of community schools at each campus.
community conversations/school improvement: avey works with community stakeholders, including students, teachers/staff, parents and community members to support great education for all children. Efforts include community-based strategic planning and partner development. In 2013-2014, avey focused on the eastside memorial and reagan vertical teams, as well as partner development for lanier hs, lbj hs and burnet ms.
family resource centers: avey began its first school-based family resource center at webb ms in 2007, and has since expanded to six campuses (burnet ms, dobie ms, webb ms, lanier hs, lbj hs and reagan hs). The frcs are a "one-stop shop" for families facing the challenges of poverty, providing assistance with employment, housing, health, counseling and other basic needs, with the goal of ensuring family stability and student academic success. Over the past eight years, austin voices' frcs have helped campuses improve attendance and academic performance by helping students focus on needs at school rather than at home.
other programs include: save texas schools and art empowerment.
