Causes: Environment, Land Resources Conservation
Mission: To develop, support, maintain and promote a system of recreational lands for biking, walking, cross-country skiing, hiking and nature observing trails in the augusta, maine area for social, health, recreational and educational benefits of children and adults of the community and region.
Programs: To support the establishment of a comprehensive trail system and recreational lands program for the benefit of residents of the city of augusta and the greater central maine community. In its sixth year (2014), augusta trails' accomplishments included the following:- oversaw the construction of additional multi-use single track trails at bond brook recreation area (bbra). - worked with the department of environmental protection, army corp of engineers and the city of augusta to build an improved road that has proper drainage and erosion protection. - organized and hosted an eight-week summer 5k trail racing series to provide runners with an opportunity for healthful exercise on the bond brook trails once a week after work. - organized and co-hosted the bond brook fest event, an all-day event of trail-run racing and mountain bike racing at bbra. - worked with a capitol area eagle scout to build four large kiosks to be installed in bbra. - designed and installed signage in bbra. Additionally, developed new mapping to reflect the new signs. - supported the quarry road nordic event through volunteer support of the race. - supported by sponsorship and volunteer activity the annual rail trail half marathon and 5k event organized by the friends of the kennebec river rail trails, an unrelated 501(c)(3) organization which supports the kennebec river rail trail recreational trails in augusta, maine.
