Mission: Zoo Atlanta strives to inspire the citizens of Atlanta and Georgia and all visitors to the Zoo to value wildlife on Earth and to help safeguard existing species through conservation. We do this by providing an informative, educational and engaging experience; being respectful and responsible stewards of the animals and the physical and financial assets entrusted to us; and engaging in related conservation activities and research.
Programs: Great apes: Home to the largest gorilla collection in the U.S. and North America’s largest collection of orangutans, Zoo Atlanta is a nationally recognized leader in the care and study of great apes.
Reptiles and amphibians: Zoo Atlanta’s reptile and amphibian collections are among the largest and most diverse in the U.S. and feature many critically endangered species. Herpetology staff members have leadership roles in international conservation projects, including the Global Amphibian Extinctions Crisis and the Asian Turtle Crisis.
Giant pandas: Zoo Atlanta is one of only four zoos in the nation housing giant pandas. Staff’s innovative approach to education, collaboration with partners in China and contributions to behavioral research play a critical role in preserving this species.
Education: Zoo Atlanta is a recognized leader in informal science education, including instructor-led school programs and learning opportunities on grounds. The Zoo’s Education staff is actively involved in advancing the profession of conservation education internationally through conservation education research.
Behavioral research: Zoo Atlanta’s strong focus on behavioral science has resulted in numerous births of endangered species at the Zoo. As a scientifically oriented zoo surrounded by nationally-recognized colleges and universities, Zoo Atlanta is a valuable contributor and a unique resource to the regional research community. Zoo staff members continue to produce an impressive volume of papers in peer-reviewed journals and other publications.
