Mission: American Leprosy Missions exists to serve as a channel of Christ's love to persons affected by leprosy and related diseases, helping them to be healed in body and spirit and restored to lives of dignity and hope.
Programs: Disability prevention and management: alm equips people to practice self-care and health systems to provide additional care. One key achievement is the development of alm's ten steps training guide to address health issues common to many neglected tropical diseases and other health conditions. This guide and the related materials will support the integration of morbidity management and disability prevention into health systems around the world.
early detection and treatment: in 2015, alm continued its close collaboration with the world health organization (who), the international federation of anti-leprosy associations (ilep) and other partner organizations in bangladesh, cote d'ivoire, dr congo, ghana, india, indonesia, liberia, myanmar, nepal and the philippines, where our strategy is to find, diagnose and treat leprosy and related diseases quickly and accurately. Alm's interest in other diseases relates particularly to those neglected tropical diseases which lead to a serious burden of disability. We continued to support buruli ulcer control programs in five countries: liberia, ghana, cote d'ivoire, nigeria and dr congo.
healthy, developing communities: alm empowers communities to improve water, sanitation, hygiene, livelihood and education. In asia and africa, alm has invested in marginalized communities with the aim of improving health and economic security, through these initiatives the susceptibility to leprosy and related diseases in such high-risk communities is reduced.
stopping transmission: alm is committed to stopping the transmission of leprosy. Our two main strategies are to support leprosy vaccine development to reach phase two trials and to expand post-exposure prophylaxis interventions to prevent transmission. Empowerment: partners in both asia and africa have implemented successful self-care, self-help and stigma reduction projects which foster inclusion by reducing stigma and discrimination through advocacy and health education. Spiritual wholeness: alm motivates and equips christian partners to serve as a channel of christ's love by equipping them to scale up their witness-related work.
