Mission: Unemployment in Israel is at an all-time high. According to government statistics, 35% of the population lives in poverty and more than half of these people are children. This means that there are over 925,800 Israeli children living in poverty. Government assistance for these families is down due to the high expenditures for security. The result has been a significant increase in malnutrition with the resultant health problems for the elderly, and behavioral and learning problems for the young. Hazon Yeshaya is trying to alleviate the problem with food assistance for immediate relief and vocational training as a long term solution.
I have volunteered at Hazon Yeshaya several times and go there whenever I am in Israel to help prepare and serve meals to the needy. Hazon Yeshaya has an amazing staff of people in the kitchen and offices. They always have a smile on, or are singing and show sincere kindness to the needy that they serve. Hazon Yeshaya provides much needed meals to people all over israel at their main location in Jerusalem and delivering meals to public school children to whom this may be the only meal they eat that day. They provide dental work, clothing and shoes, and vocational education to help adults get jobs to support themselves. All of this is organized by a wonderful man who has made his lifes goal to help feed and provide basic necessities to the needy throughout Israel.
