the united teachers of flint, inc. Is a not-for-profit membership organization exempt from income tax under 501(c)(5) of the u. S. Internal revenue code. The purposes of the organization, as outlined in its bylaws, is to: -work for the welfare of school children, the advancement of education and the improvement of instructional opportunities for all. -develop and promote the adoption of such ethical practices, personnel policies and standards of preparation and participation as marks teaching as a profession. -unify and strengthen the teaching profession and to secure and maintain the salaries, retirement, tenure, professional and sick leave and other working conditions necessary to support teaching as a profession. -enable members to speak with a common voice on school policy pertaining to the teaching profession and to present their common interest before the board of education and other legal authorities. -cooperate with parent-teacher organizations and other civic bodies having education objectives and to aid in interpreting to the public the problems, functions and progress of public schools. -encourage teachers to exercise their rights and privileges as citizens and accept willingly leadership in civil affairs. -hold property and funds to employ a staff for the attainment of these purposes.
