Mission: The Amazon Institute was founded on the belief that our youth can change the world. Given the opportunity to work on projects that address important issues, they are in a better position to lead social change. We achieve this mission by funding 501(3)c organizations providing at risk students educational opportunities to learn, build life skills and contribute to the community.
Programs: Since 2005, the Amazon Institute has offered mentoring to at risk youth aged 12 to 17. The mission of the Amazon Institute isto provide direct-to-youth mentoring that will improve lifeoutcomes for vulnerable and disengaged children by developing resilienceskills, supporting the development of personal strengths, and increasingself-sufficiency. The AmazonInstitute incorporates programming based on the principle that all young peoplehave a need for caring people and challenging possibilities in their lives.Reflection, youth voice, and positive relationships with adults are experiencesconsidered to be important factors in producing effective studentlearning. The Amazon Institutebelieves that resilience is not a genetic trait that only a few “superkids”possess. Rather, when providedwith a caring environment, high expectations and meaningful opportunities, youth have an inborn capacity for positive transformation. The goals of our mentoring program areto improve at-risk students attendance, state testing scores, behaviors and self-worth through caring adults who meet with their students one hour, three times a week during the school year.
