Mission: To build a strong organization of manufacturing representatives to focus on three main areas: training and education, outreach, and strategic partnerships and grants.
Programs: Programs:awt creates awareness of manufacturing careers through its programs, in order to help reduce the workforce skills gap created by shifting demographics and decreased enrollment in cte programs. Awt's primary manufacturing education programs include:1) robobots (in which students learn combat robotics through the national robotics league at the high school level) and awt's own junior bots program at the middle school level. These combat robotics programs give students the opportunity to design, build, machine, and test their own products, working with adult mentors and in the case of high school students often in manufacturing facilities. This hands-on experience helps them build a comfort level with this work as well as help students discover their own aptitudes and interests. Even students who may not ultimately pursue a career in manufacturing benefit from exposure to a variety of businesses. Over two hundred students from across northeast ohio compete in each division every year and see whose machine will be the winner. 2) thinkmfg student expo. Working with the lake county chambers of commerce, the expo is a way for many lake county students to learn about careers in local businesses and industries. Students attend a trade show where they see featured products and learn about career paths, as well as hearing from human resource professionals about what skills might be required, and from young manufacturers about their own paths to success. 3) summer manufacturing institute. Assisted by ohio means jobs geauga county, auburn career center and the office of senator sherrod brown, smi is a summer camp program for young people in which students can explore connections between science, technology, engineering, and math and the factory floor. Students build science projects and go on field trips to local manufacturing facilities. In this way, students gain an exposure to manufacturing before they choose their high school pathway. 4) edufactor and digital resources. Awt has made the video and lesson-plan library of edufactor available as a tool to all middle & high schools in lake and geauga counties. Edufactor's programs use storytelling to connect science concepts to industry, and then dive deeper into the concepts or careers therein.
memberships:being a member of awt states that you are a company that is willing to help work with the mission. When a school needs to bring in a speaker for career day, we ask our members first. Additionally, when we have promising students within the schools that we work with looking for internships, awt members are invited to interview these candidates.
events:special events like a traditional charity golf outing, annual meeting, or lunches help to build relationships among members and continue to share the message and mission of awt.
