Mission: To enhance the Alaska trail experience by supporting sustainable, world renowned trails through advocacy and education. Goals: To promote sustainable trail systems for all users: By developing and providing technical assistance for trail projects To promote the health, social and economic benefits of trails: By educating users through forums, conferences, information materials, training and other activities: To preserve and improve public trail access: By assisting public and private organizations in forming coordinated programs, policies, and standards.
Programs: Trail training & education: alaska trails conducted several trail trainings across the state in 2014. Alaska trails also taught an advanced series of classes in conjunction with fort wainwright. Ohv trails and a trail contracting class were conducted in april. Alaska trails also hosted its 2014 statewide trails conference in april of 2014 at alaska pacific university in anchorage.
projects/partners:alaska trails enjoyed a successful partnership with the valley mountain bikes and hikers (vmbah)in 2014. The government peak singletrack project was funded by a recreational trails program (rtp) grant, and was nearly completed in fall 2014. Vmbah will complete the trails in the hatcher pass area in the spring of 2015. The government peak singletrack is a network of trails located within the northwest corner of the government peak recreation area off edgerton parks road. The initial 3. 5 miles of trail will be designed for all levels of mountain bikers, and will also be available to hikers, nordic skiers, snowshoers and winter bikers. Construction was completed in accordance with international mountain biking association (imba) sustainable trail standards.
volunteer engagement - tool trailer: alaska trails manages two mobile tool trailers, one in fairbanks and one in anchorage, making them available to volunteers and renting them to trail groups. Groups including the friends of the nike summit used the tools in 2014. The coalition for recreational trails honored the alaska trails mobile tool trailers with a 2014 annual achievement award for outstanding use of recreational trails program funds in the category of use of youth conservation and service corps.
