Causes: Disaster Aid
Mission: Enhance the quality and effectiveness of alaska's criminal justice system by providing our members access to a professional network of law enforcement executives. Provide training, mentoring, and professional assistance. Provide useful tools to assist alaska's law enforcement administrators in becoming better leaders and managers. Endeavors to monitor the state of alaska legislative process, educate members on relevant legislative affairs, and to educate lawmakers on behalf of our membership.
Programs: National law enforcement & corrections technology alaska regional center (nlectc-ak): nlectc-ak supports the usdog-nij with outreach and support across alaska by disseminating information and support to criminal justice agencies regarding federal research and programs designed to improve the criminal justice process in the us. We operated a statewide program office for nlectc-ak that provided toll free telephone support during business hours, sponsorship of two statewide training conferences, representation of alaskan agencies nationally through the international association of chiefs of police, events/incidents/developments that affect the criminal justice system, and several regional training conferences on use of specific technology supporting the crimnial justice system.
alaska law enforcement agency accreditation commission (aleaac): we provided a central clearing house for collecting and dissemination information and training to law enforcement agencies seeking recognition and accreditation for meeting minimum professional standards. During the year, three new alaskan agencies began this process, five agencies sent representatives to training hosted by us on the process and documentation necessary to attain accreditation, and one accredited agency renewed its required documentation to retain their status.
background checks: criminal justice agencies require thorough background checks for condidates applying for positions of public trust. Many of the agencies are small and lack experience, expertise and/or necessary resources to conduct a legal and thorough investigation. We endeavored to support those agencies by devoting available time of qulaified and experienced staff in conducting and documenting background investigations to assure the best candidates were selected for key positions.
