Causes: Environment, Land Resources Conservation
Mission: To engage and support through activities community capacity building for self sustainability. To provide guidance for maintenance of the trail through community involvement and stewardship. To support and provide education, research and recordation of oral history and historical sites along the trail for the benefit of the trail.
Programs: Fabricate a canoe from the mold that was funded last year. The canoe will be the property of ala kahakai trail association but will be housed and used by the na pea youth organization. The canoe will be one of several that will be used to train and educate youth on sailing, maintenance and instructing other youth on sailing the open ocean. The program will also use landings along the ala kahakai national historic trail as a part of their education on the trail and its correlation to the coast and coastal waters.
supplies and equipment to teach and guide volunteers on trial maintenance. This program is essential in keeping the trail in accessible condition. Much of the trail is in passive preservation with very little maintenance. The volunteers help to clean the invasive shrubs and trees from the trail corridor and as a benefit, learn about the trail through stories from people who have long ancestral ties to that portion of the trail.
a grant from nps foundation was granted to help bring awareness in the community about the national historic trail and the resources. Ata was able to hold several sessions with community groups as well as resorts along the northern portion of the trail. Guided hikes were also conducted. This project will continue to next year.
