Mission: the African American Women's Resource Center is an educational and cultural service center. Our mission is to develop, support and maintain policies, programs, projects and activities that inform, educate, empower and celebrate women and girls of the African Diaspora. We also serve as a resource, referral and networking source of information concerning this population
Programs: AAWRC provides leadership and life skills training to girls in an aftershool program, including an intensive reading, writing and speaking initiative in order to equip the girls with tools necessary to advance their socio/economic place in the world. The Center also provides workshops for women of the African Diaspora who gather weekly to discuss challenges and discover solutions to those challenges. As a community resource, the Center provides information and referrals relating to this population. Sisterfriends Performances is a program to provide at least 1,000 black women in the DC area with culturally-specific opportunities for education about the symptoms of ovarian cancer. During 2005, the Center will set up its first computer lab to provide youth with opportunities available to them through computer literacy.
