Mission: The adult literacy league serves by building a literate community. We educate adults to become self-sufficient members of society and we advocate on behalf of adult and family literacy.
Programs: Literacy has the power to reduce crime, unemployment, discrimination, injustice, and dependence on public assistance. The men and women who gather their courage and come to the adult literacy league desperately want to learn and are willing to commit to long hours studying each week. The one-to-one and small group tutoring program helps men and women build a better life when they acquire the literacy skills that many of us take for granted. Their world expands when they can fill out a job application, improve employment skills, open a bank account, register to vote, use a computer, read to their children, or earn their ged. The adult literacy league's family literacy program provides books and other literacy materials for pre-school children living in poverty. This program trains parents to be the first and most effective teacher in their children's life to prepare them for success when they enter school. Family literacy breaks the cycle of poverty.
