Mission: The mission of abby's friends is four fold. 1. To educate the public and raise awareness in the community about type 1 diabetes. 2. To support research initiatives in finding a cure for diabetes. 3. To enhance the quality of life for all type 1 diabetics by encouraging advances in diabetes research, management, and care. 4. To empower the diabetic and their family through educational resources. All funds raised by abby's friends are divided and dispersed equally between the three listed organizations whose missions are in alignment and supportive of our mission.
Programs: All proceeds raised by abby's friends go to assist other non-profit organizations that focus on type 1 diabetes. Three of the organizations abby's friends support are:a. Juvenile diabetes research foundation (jdrf) the jdrf is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (t1d) research. Jdrf's goal is to progressively remove the impact of t1d from people's lives until they achieve a world without t1d. Jdrf collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to better treat, prevent, and eventually cure t1d. Jdrf's highest priority remains funding research to deliver a cure for t1d and its complications. At the same time, jdrf is also focused on developing better treatments that will transform the way people with t1d treat the disease today, in order to help them live healthier lives now and in the future. Finally, jdrf also seeks to prevent t1d, to keep future generations from developing the disease. Jdrf-funded research has led to many landmark advances in t1d science. Jdrf is now in the exciting position of taking that research knowledge and translating it into real therapies that will make life-changing differences for those facing the daily challenges of t1d. Currently, jdrf is funding more than 50 human clinical trials, several of which are in the advanced stages of clinical testing needed before fda approvals can be sought. B. Medical university of south carolina pediatric endocrinology department. Musc pediatric endocrinology is an integral part of the medical university of south carolina's department of pediatrics. They strive to provide excellence in patient care, teaching, and research. They are dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care within a compassionate and caring environment. Because each individual's health care needs are unique, every patient has an individualized plan of care. The team includes three attending physicians, three certified diabetes educators, a nutritionist and a social worker. Abby's friends provides a grant to musc children's hospital for a full-time pediatric juvenile diabetes social worker who leads support groups for children with juvenile diabetes in the lowcountry. The diabetes social/support groups are held once a month and run by the musc pediatric endocrinology social worker. Groups are held in different locations on a monthly basis in the tri-county and myrtle beach area. The groups are based on age: 4-9 year olds, 10-13 year olds, and 14-18 year olds. The groups provide support and social interaction for children with diabetes as well as their families. Abby's friends also funds resource materials used by the social/support groups. C. Camp adam fisher. Camp adam fisher is a weeklong overnight camp for children with diabetes, their brothers, sisters and friends ages 6-17. Their mission is to offer all the experiences, lessons, and benefits of summer camp to children with diabetes, while teaching them how to live longer and healthier lives. They also offer a counselor in training (cit) program for teenagers ages 16-17. Children come from all over the southeast to experience this unique opportunity, while learning more about managing their diabetes. Abby's friends provides scholarships for camp attendees who otherwise would not be able to attend due to financial reasons.
